Ed's Eye

In a recently televised match between Wigan Warriors & St Helens the referee dismissed Michael McIlorum for a high tackle, as this decision was not instant did the Sky screen in the stadium play any part in the referee's deliberations.

The Sky replays of the incident of which there were many, were seen clearly from the neutrals armchair well before Klein seemed to engage in the situation, if? These were shown on the stadium screen in the lead up to the decision then plainly Sky’s involvement goes past that of broadcaster & even more worrying is Eddie Hemmings involved in matters he has no knowledge of? Nothing new there then.

We can only hope Eddie’s latest campaign ‘Long for England’ is not as prolonged as his ‘Briers for GB’ and does not bore the fans to the extent where they look for Virgin territory.

On the sending off, Ashley Klein (referee) surely made his intentions clear with the red card, yet within minutes Wilkins was penalised for a head high tackle with no more than a penalty awarded to Wigan.

Unless Mr. Klein is actually Doctor Klein he can only make a judgement on the tackle & not its medical repercussions, given this, surely he had to send off all deemed to have made such tackles following his initial decision if consistency is ever to be achieved? But then again the match would have been more akin to the Middlesex Sevens.

The following night Catalan v Leeds saw three head high tackles, none of which led to a red/yellow or even a birthday card being issued, with tackles on Lauititi & Smith of the same ferocity as the McIlorum incident, whilst the tackle on McGuire could eventually lead if somewhat belatedly to the RFL following the rest of the western world in outlawing garroting.

Given referee’s decisions in recent weeks, perhaps the other eleven teams in Super League should now field twelve players from the off, thereby guaranteeing consistency for the referee whilst ensuring The Saint’s are not seriously disadvantaged by the confusion of playing an opposition with a full compliment of players, as any other outcome could quite obviously seriously disadvantage their quest for trophies.

Incidentally did I mention Keiron Cunningham, consistently the best player in SL & yet never won MOS.
