The dominance of UK supermarket/retailers Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons are estimated to control in the region of 75% of the £120bn UK food/grocery market.
There has been concern for sometime about planning and the companies land assets.
There has also been suggestions the purchasing power of big supermarkets could alter competition.
The UK food retailing sector is so highly influenced by the large retailers there are genuine concerns by some of driving local convenience stores and independent retailers from the High Street and the suburbs. Some would say this is already the case, with the large suburbs either having the supermarket or their convenience format store, and point to the evidence of between 2000 and 2004, 7,337 independent retailers closed.
