David Cameron welcomed Kenneth Clarke back to the Tory front bench with the post of shadow business secretary.
It is thought the return signals the need for experience on the front bench with Clarke’s former cabinet posts as Home Secretary, Health Secretary & Chancellor bringing much needed gravitas to the Conservative front bench.
Clarke’s pro-Europe view has previously been the sticking point for any return, but is ability to identify with the electorate may become critical if the volatility of the polls continue.
It is also a fact the Labour front bench are at best wary of Clarke with many feeling that Brown’s tenure as a Chancellor would have been seriously curtailed & his elevation to P.M. never materialised had he faced the redoubtable Clarke at the dispatch box. It may be Clarke’s new post will allow him to stand in for Osborne probably leaving the inept Darling feeling like his colly had never been so wobbled, and should he ever get the opportunity to face Brown then we will see a savaging of such proportions that Brown by nature could also be brown by trouser. |
